- How do you explain community integration to referral sources who are rooted in a medical model?
- What language or framing has been most effective when describing your services?
- How do you differentiate community integration from traditional outpatient or higher levels of care?
- What challenges or misconceptions do you commonly encounter—and how do you address them?

The Benefits of Volunteerism in Community Integration
Presented by: Tom Novak, Career and Education Development Coordinator at Spruce Mountain Inn
Community integration is most effective when it is built into treatment itself, not treated as a goal that happens afterward. In this session, Spruce Mountain Inn will explore how structured volunteer programs can serve as a powerful clinical tool within community-based care. Participants will learn how meaningful volunteer experiences help clients build skills, explore career interests, and strengthen social connection while supporting mental health recovery. Through client examples and supporting research, this presentation will demonstrate how volunteer engagement can become a practical, evidence-informed component of treatment that promotes purpose and long-term community integration.
